In a surprising move, the Boston Red Sox have traded All-Star slugger Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants. The blockbuster deal was announced on Sunday, June 15, 2025.
The Giants acquired Devers in exchange for a package of players that includes pitchers Jordan Hicks and Kyle Harrison, along with prospects James Tibbs III and Jose Bello. The Giants will also be taking on the entirety of Devers' substantial contract, which was a 10-year, $313.5 million extension he signed in 2023.
This trade comes amidst some reported tension between Devers and the Red Sox organization regarding his defensive position this season, particularly after the Red Sox signed third baseman Alex Bregman and asked Devers to move to designated hitter, and later to first base, which he declined.
Devers, a three-time All-Star and a key contributor to the Red Sox's 2018 World Series championship, was having a strong offensive season for Boston before the trade. He will now join a Giants team looking to bolster its offense as they contend in the competitive NL West.
